03/01/11 Stockholm - Kiruna (IceHotel)

An early morning start to worship the porcelain god and then we leave the boat to catch a taxi, to catch a train to catch a plane, to catch a bus to the Ice Hotel in Kiruna. (Haha should we add another mode of transport or is that enough?)

MaMaMa MaMa MaMa My Kiruna! Where the dawn is at 8.30am and dusk is at 2pm. In the summer the sun never sets and in the winter it never rises. The place was absolutely stunning!!

The hotel itself is rebuilt every year in winter and naturally melts away when the weather warms up. Its made from ice and snow and is a steady -5 regardless of the temperature outside. The idea of an ice hotel came about when it used to be an ice art gallery. A group of 20 guys could not find any accommodation after leaving it too late to book. They would die in the cold outside if they could not find somewhere to sleep. Someone suggested they try stay in the art gallery. When they managed to survive the night, the idea of an ice hotel was born.

We did a tour of the hotel. Stunning hallway with ice chandelier, feature and giant columns, awesome icebar with deerskin chairs and ice glasses for your drinks. A beautiful church that you would be mad to get married in... wearing a dress in -5... Screw that! Then there were the art rooms. Oh the art rooms... They were beautiful! Words can not describe it so please have a look at the pictures. We had 3 clear favorites. The Polar bear and cubs that look over your bed, The convertible car bed and the seaside house with a view of the waves and seagulls outside and a cosy ice fire and bed inside. These rooms were the real flash ones and I was very tempted to check if there were any art rooms empty after bed time...
Our room was pretty cool anyway, 2 arm chairs and an ice sculpture. A cosy ice bed... brrrrrrr!
We had a few drinks in the ice bar, went out for dinner, got a free soup that was massive :P Then the northern lights danced through the sky. It was amazing seeing the green light waving through the sky.

We took our ghost buster suits off and had to run from the warm hotel to our ice beds in our long johns... It was -32 outside!
